Always look for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification on furniture made from virgin timber. FSC certification guarantees that the timber has been sourced from responsibly managed forests. The certification considers a number of factors, including: biodiversity protection, community rights, fair wages and working environment and the protection of forests from deforestation. That’s because trees are harvested responsibly so there is no net loss of forest over time and forests with irreplaceable values, such as old-growth forests, are identified and maintained.

Note that if you’re choosing teak garden furniture, the colour of your garden furniture can change over time. Untreated teak wood is golden brown in colour. The older the hardwood is, the darker the colour of the wood. When the wood is used outdoors, rain and sun cause the outer layer to turn grey. This silvering creates a beautiful, weathered effect and is the natural process by which the wood gives itself protection from the elements.

You can choose to allow this natural weathering to occur or regularly treat the wood to maintain its original golden colour. If you choose the latter, please always review and adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions first.
